Bodycam: Fla. Sheriff's Officers Stop Suspect Trying to Stab Man
Recently released body camera footage that captured Florida sheriff's officers stopping a suspect with a butter knife from stabbing another man last week.
The incident happened at about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 28 when Jacksonville County sheriff's officers responded to a report of a carjacking in the Hogan's Creek neighborhood of Jacksonville, the agency stated in a statement. As deputies were talking to the victim at the scene, bystanders told them about a nearby person wielding a knife.
The deputies raced to where a struggle was unfolding between two people. In the body camera footage, one of the individuals appears to be trying to stab the other person with a knife.
One of the deputies repeatedly ordered the man with the knife to drop the weapon. When he didn't reply, the deputy opened fire.
Despite the gunfire, the two men continued to brawl. That's when another deputy reached the struggle and shot the armed suspect.
The suspect was handcuffed, and an officer began performing life-saving measures. The suspect, however, died at the scene.
According to the agency, the suspect "had a lengthy criminal history, including multiple crimes such as aggravated assault, drug sales, and domestic battery." He had been released from a five-year prison sentence in June.
The victim was evaluated to see if he had been stabbed, but no wounds were found. A butter knife was recovered from the scene.
The incident is under investigation.
